Maldonada 2001

[see: Personality, sex and computer-mediated communication through the Internet]

Introverted participants posted as many messages as extraverts, and their messages contained more information. [Note: there are more extraverts in the wider population, so this means either more introverts are attracted to message boards, or more introverts post to message boards.]

Males sent longer messages than females, but they contained no more information.

He also states that no studies of CMC related with personality exist at this time - 2001.

Introverts prefer activities that can be carried out in isolation, whilst extraverts search for social interaction. Introverts interaction rhythm is slower than extraverts because they are more reflective, whereas extraverts are more impulsive. An extravert does not require as much time to formulate an answer. Hence F2F favours extraverts. The reflective element of online comms appeals to introverts. This means that they have equal capacity to participate... i.e. they are not disadvantaged.

Neurotics prefer online communications because there are less non-verbal and emotional contexts.

Women are more people-oriented, talk more about themselves, reveal a higher number of thoughts and feelings and interact with others to a greater extent. [Note: I wonder if this means they prefer blogs... online diaries?] [Note: this sounds like the 'feeling' MBTI.]

In CMC the gender roles are similar to F2F. Women tend to support, males tend to confront. Males write longer messages, more frequently, in a critical way and use more sarcasm. Women write shorter messages but express more doubts, suggestions and gratitude.

Used 7 categories:
1. informatives: affirmations in which objective information is stated
2. values: expressions from own point of view
3. interactives: courtesy phrases directed towards a specific person
4. social: phrases that are not related to topic's formal content
5. metacognitives: reflections about own thoughts
6. questions:
7. contextual: statements lacking formal contexts

Results:
1. No difference between personalities of students who used Internet and those who didn't. [Note: so other factors must be involved]
2. Younger students sent more messages than older students.
3. Older students wrote longer messages with more information.
4. Introverts' messages contain more values and metacognitives, and contextual.
5. Males ask more questions than females.
6. Younger students formulate more values than older.
7. Older students ask more questions than younger.
8. The majority of messages were from extraverts, but their participation decreases progressively while that of introverts remain constant. Extraverts start with a high level of participation.
9. Introverts express a greater number of ideas - and have a more efficient style of communication.
10. No difference between males and females in participation or constancy.

They comment that females use more emoticons - to compensate for the absence of non-verbal signs in CMC
